Burgoo: a thick, seasoned soup or stew, typically made of small game, corn, tomatoes, and onions.
Bern or Berne: (German: Bern, French: Berne, Italian: Berma, Romanish: Berna) the capital of Switzerland as well as the capital of the Canton of Bern.
Berne Township: one of thirteen townships in Fairfield County, Ohio; named by Samuel Carpenter in honor of his ancestral home, Berne, Switzerland.
Berne Township is largely rural with the exception of Sugar Grove, a small village named after a grove of sugar maples. A few farmers grow corn, soybeans, straw, or pumpkins but the township is predominantly a maze of steep, hardwood forested hollows. There are an abundance of white-tailed deer, coyotes, turkeys, and small game with the rare sighting of bobcats and black bears. Most of the residents live quiet, simple lives and some are still dependent upon hunting game and gardening to make ends meet. It's a stereotypically forgotten, rural Appalachian community offering nothing of fame or fortune to urbanity, which is it's most admirable aspect.
This burgoo contains much more than Berne Township but it remains the prominent ingredient. It's insouciant character, hickory-shaded hollows, and picturesque views from steep wooded trails are as much ingredients in this burgoo as it's self-sufficiency, rigidness, and inadequate contributions to pop culture. This recipe also includes ingredients from an inconsistent assortment of cultures and climates, places of ardor, and places of ruination. It is, as they say, "an acquired taste".
Enjoy responsibly and bon appetit!
